"Ziggy played guitar..."

Today saw the unveiling of The Crown Estate’s commemorative plaque to celebrate the anniversary of Ziggy Stardust’s fall to earth 40 years ago. Guest of honour Gary Kemp, of Spandau Ballet, unveiled the plaque at 23 Heddon Street, just off Regent Street, this morning to a mixed crowd of media and Ziggy fans.

The plaque has been erected at the spot where David Bowie first posed as ‘Ziggy’ for the album cover to ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’, on a drizzly night in January 1972.

The star-studded unveiling was attended by Mick Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder- both original members of the band, Spiders from Mars. Also in attendance, alongside Gary Kemp, was illustrator Terry Pastor, who created the famous album cover.

The plaque will no doubt exist from now on as a place of pilgrimage for glam rock and British pop fans alike, to attend the spot where the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ that we know and love today, was beamed down from space for the very first time.

Christmas in the courtyard

The incredible London Community Gospel Choir performed at St Martin’s Courtyard on Saturday, as part of a festive feast of events taking place during December.  Audience participation was a given, particularly when the choir belted out Christmas classics like Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’.  Free winter Pimm’s and roast chestnuts added festive cheer to the proceedings.

Carnaby 20% Shopping Party

The Sister team well and truly got stuck into the 20% Shopping Party, and can you blame us!? 20% off nearly all the stores and restaurants in the area, especially with it coming up to christmas. Most of the shops had some great in-store activities. Bombay Bicycle Club had a DJ set in Ben Sherman, free drinks were handed out in most stores and the Luminites played 3 sets on a stage in the Newburgh Quarter. Not only all that, but the Sister design team also fitted out the registration point just off Carnaby Street, (shown above).

Hotter Than Madrid!

Last Friday, when London temperatures reached almost 30C, the Sister girls went to Heddon Street to cool off and make the most of the last days of the ‘Summer’. This temperatures are very unusual for the UK making London being even hotter than Madrid, where Lucia comes from.

This October, Britain has experienced the hottest day on record with the highest temperature being 29.6C in southeast England.

Power of Making

Sister hit the V&A during the London Design Festival and ‘The Power of Making’ has been a particular favorite amongst the design team.

Power of Making celebrates the role of making in our lives by presenting an eclectic selection of exquisitely crafted objects. Presenting a range of skills that are imaginative, spectacular and beautifully random.

The design team had some favorite pieces; everyone loved the Gorilla that opens the exhibition, the 8 foot Silver ape looked spectacular from far away but when we approached it turned out it was intricately made by wire coat hangers. Anders enjoyed the ‘Crochetdermy Bear’ by Shauna Richardson, the huge beast was made entirely out of knitting fabric. Adam felt somewhat star - struck with the Fantastic Mr Fox Puppet. Marcin fancied a bit of bling with Ben Wilsons Swarovski Low-Rider, made from 110,000 swarovski crystals. While Hana’s favorite was Michael Rea’s prosthetic suit for Stephen Hawking with Japanese Steel.

This show is a must see, and what makes it even better is that it runs until January 2nd
